Solar energy management is becoming increasingly important and new solar solutions are available that provide smarter and better use of solar generated power for the home.
Here are some of the latest Smart Solar energy management solutions available in 2024.
Daytime Basic Backup Power
Contrary to popular belief, a standard grid-tied solar power system doesn't continue to run when the grid power goes down. This is because batteries are required to keep off-grid solar production going. Many people looking at solar power want access to electricity during a power fail but can't afford a fully managed solar battery system.
A solution is now available that provides basic backup power for one 10-amp socket during a mains grid power failure. This allows you to charge your phone or keep the fridge running while the sun is shining. Since no battery is involved, this solution doesn't run at night, but is an extremely good "middle-ground" solution during a grid power fail. Having some power available is better than none.
Solar EV Charger
New EV chargers provide features such as timers, current limits, RFID access control and a special feature known as Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB).
DLB gives you greater control of solar power to your car. Charging modes are available including,
- Pure Solar Mode - to charge your vehicle solely from generated solar power
- Hybrid mode - to use a combination of solar generated and/or grid power
- Full speed mode - the fastest charge regardless of available solar or grid power
Solar Hot Water Control
A solar energy controller can be installed within the meter box that diverts excess solar energy to heat your hot water. The controller can be adjusted to heat water immediately (from mains grid power), to never using the mains at all (great if you are going on holiday).
It also automatically adjusts its timer settings to make the best use of your solar energy as it learns every day. This provides significant savings.
Solar Heat Pump Control
Solar power can now be matched with a heat pump that can respond to external control signals. This provides an integrated heat pump energy management system.
The solar power system can use solar energy efficiently according to the requirements set by the user (grid power, battery capacity, time, etc.) to reduce the use of mains and grid power for heating.
Solar Energy Controllers
A solar energy controller can control electrical loads based on time, or how much energy your solar system is producing, or a combination of both.
A very helpful example of this is if you want to turn on a large load, but only when your solar system is exporting 3kW of energy or more. This can be programmed into the controller with ease.
This can be used for hot water, air conditioners, pool pumps, irrigation and stock watering pumps, underfloor heating, fans and garden water pumps.
